I am back from a fun and busy trip to LA. It was great to get to know the people behind the blogs that I love to read. Alissa, Latifah, Katie and the rest of the LA Modern Quilt guild were so nice to me, I just wanted to stay forever. While I was in LA, I dropped off a quilt that I had been working on for the last couple of months. I am so excited that I get to finally share it on my blog!
A month or so after Spring quilt market, I was contacted by Cabbages & Roses, a UK based company, that has a soon to be released fabric line with Moda. They wanted to commission me to make a quilt featuring fabric from their new line, Northcote Range, and quilt the heck out of it with my style of quilting. Who can resist an offer like that? Not me!
The thought of designing a quilt to show off the fabric and my quilting was music to my ears. So after receiving a box of the beautiful Northcote Range fabric, I began the work of making and quilting a quilt.

When working with Christina, the driving force behind Cabbages & Roses, she expressed a desire to combine the “refined rustic” look of her fabric with the style of American quilters. While making the quilt, I kept this in the front of my mind!
I opted for the bold squares in the middle because I like the way they look like frames. Each “frame” showcasing a print in the fabric line.
In contrast, I used randomly sized blocks to make up a patchwork border. I love the “shabby” look it gives to the quilt.
When the time came to quilt it, I kept the same theme. Within the patchwork border, I quilted many different designs. I wanted to add different textures and looks to each block. I knew that it would add to the fun, thrown-together look I was going for.
While quilting the middle portion of the quilt, I combined a traditional design, the feather wreath, with other feather designs that were a little different.
And because, deep in my heart I will always love feathers, I added feathers in the opposite corners of the quilt and filled in around them with a tiny swirl design 
I used two layers of batting in this quilt, a layer of Quilter’s Dream Poly with a layer of Quilter’s Dream wool. I love how it makes the feathers pop out just a little but not too much.
Jessica, who sewed on the binding, finished off the quilt with a scrappy pieced binding.
I can just imagine this quilt laid out in the sun, ready for a picnic. Doesn’t that sounds divine?
Ahhhhh…….wake me in an hour or two.
Northcote Range fabric should start shipping this week and is available for order at the Fat Quarter Shop. I opted for the sweet and lovely pink colorway, but two other colorways are available as well.
Because Moda is so generous, I had some fabric leftover.

Wow – there would be no way this would be a picnic quilt! You just do the absolutely most fabulous quilting. I love how your mind works as to where to put each motif so that it is shown perfectly.
I love your choice of pattern and your choice of fabric, but I love your choice of quilting motifs even more. The quilt is beautiful! I am always amazed when I look at quilts that you have quilted. My mind trys to figure out how you choose the various quilting motifs for each quilt. Your quilting is anything but simple, but all the design combinations go together so well and make so much sense in the final product. Will your new book be a “how-to” book? I can take templates and figure out how to quilt a quilt, but my quilts will never have the same finished “look” that yours have. I wish I could just get inside your head as you look at a quilt, consider the requests of the quilt’s owner/designer, and then figure out what you’re going to do to make the quilting unique. This is a great quilt. I love the fabrics and the way they were used in the quilt with the dark frames really emphasizing the center blocks. The pieced borders are nice because they’re interesting and yet don’t pull the focus away from the center. Of course, your quilting is magnificent Angela! Em loves her ladybug quilt so, so much and loves pointing out her name and mine in the quilting.

What a beautiful quilt! The first quilt I ever made was from fabric from a Moda line by Three Sisters that was beautifully feminine. I pieced it and quilted it all by hand. It was my first and I didn’t know what I was doing but wherever I went with it (especially on a cross-country train trip) I was approached by quilters, including a master quilter from Australia, who offered instruction and great advice. My daughter and I named it “Most Beautiful Quilt” and it was ready for her 16th birthday. She just graduated from college and now has 2 other quilts and many of her friends have my quilts but that first will always be my favorite! Your most beautiful quilt reminds me of it. Congratulations.

I like the term “refined rustic.” Your soft reds — more to the blue side than the yellow side — define that. And the quilting on your sample is gorgeous!
